This post has been a long time coming! I’ve worked 3 sets of nights and 3 weekends since my last update so I’ve been a bit overwhelmed with work.. and partying!
The fact that I’m working so much reduces the time I have to do anything fun really. This month I’ve had 2 BIG nights out and I’m sorry to say I borrowed £50 from my mum and £20 from my friend Jen (THANKS JEN!)! I was desperate to go to a festival in Bristol called Love Saves the Day and I couldn’t have done it on the benefit budget without a little help. So, I cheated. And still owe Jen £20 a month on…
The food situation is starting to be a real irritation now. It’s little things like wanting to buy a red bull after a night shift, or really, really wanting an impromptu latte! And worst of all, not having my McDonalds breakfast after the last in a stretch of night shifts. Also, we’re finding that we can do nice things once a week, if one of us stays at home. That in itself can cause a little friction. For example, as I write this I’m meeting a friend in a couple of hours. I’ll be using our weekly “fun” budget to enjoy myself. Last week was The Chef’s fun week - I was working as usual.
So, sadly, living in a shared house is doing my absolute nut. Initially I thought the girls I lived with were normal… How wrong I was. Last week, the girl who owns the house decided she wanted to do a “room inspection” and waited until we were all out to come into our rooms to check that they were ok and that we didn’t have any dishes in there… ER, WHAT? I genuinely almost collapsed when I found out! Coupled with that, the front garden has grown to levels reminiscent of a rainforest and she had the cheek to ask us all to chip in £30 to get it manageable. Now, I’m not sure if I’m being a little mean but how is that my problem? It was supposed to be everything included in the rent! Leaving your garden to be so overgrown that a fully grown bear could be resident without one knowing is just not my issue. Or in my budget.
Staying on the maintenance issue, the windows in our bedroom have no keys to the locks. For me, this isn’t so much a problem, but for the chef it’s a complete nightmare. He can’t sleep at the moment because it’s so warm outside and the room is so stuffy. We mentioned it when we moved in and it’s still not fixed. My patience is running thin.
Also, one of the other girls in the house is a little bit filthy. She ends up keeping plates, mugs and cutlery in her room for days and days. Now, I’m pretty chilled out and things like that don’t really wind me up. Your space, your problem. However, the owner of the house sees things differently. So much so that she’s removed all the cutlery from the kitchen as she doesn’t want anyone using it.
I have no words. Or a bed yet!
Since we last had a catch up, we’ve tried to cut our bills. The chef has got a pay as you go phone (old school) and I still have my contract phone. We’re making good use of Whatsapp, Viper and Skype so things aren’t too bad with contacting each other through the day.
Fathers day the other weekend was lovely. I ended up being treated to the most luxurious dinner with my dad at the Ritz. It was lovely to spend time with my dad, just the two of us, but the cost of the meal was more than the budget The chef and I have for 2 weeks! Ridiculous! Tasty, but truly ridiculous.
Anyway, my schedule at work starts to slow down a little for the next few weeks. I’m working the next 2 weekends but I’m off until Friday now having just worked the weekend from hell. JUST 6 WEEKS LEFT IN A&E. Bring it on! Expect more regular updates!
p.s. Thanks for all of you that have messaged me personally. They feel as good as I imagine a £50 note would feel right now.
p.p.s. If you’re in bristol and have a double bed going, please message me!
p.p.p.s (pretty sure that’s not allowed) What do you guys think about my housemate situation. She’s nuts right?
